A look at the evolving cannabis industry on Cape Cod.

Cannabis has been a hot topic on Cape Cod in recent years, with the legalization of recreational use in Massachusetts in 2016. Since then, the industry has been steadily growing, with new dispensaries opening up and existing ones expanding their offerings. However, with new legislation on the horizon, some towns on the Cape may see a decrease in cannabis retail sales revenue.

Towns might lose cannabis retail sales money under new legislation. Here's why, and a look at the pot landscape on Cape, in Provincetown and beyond.

Provincetown, for example, has seen a recent decrease in the number of dispensaries operating within its borders. What used to be five marijuana dispensaries in Provincetown is now just four. Heal Provincetown, which was originally planned to be the town's fifth dispensary, has been delayed due to a legal dispute with the town.

Meanwhile, other towns on the Cape are moving forward with cannabis-related projects. The Mashpee Select Board recently agreed to move forward with a host agreement with Sublime Cannabis, a recreational cannabis store and manufacturing facility. However, proposals to move two historic buildings in Bourne were approved at town meeting, while retail marijuana sales were denied again.

Despite these setbacks, the cannabis industry on Cape Cod continues to grow. As one marijuana retailer continues to make its way through local permitting in Orleans, a second retailer expects to begin the process this summer.

One company that has recently entered the Cape Cod market is Ascend Wellness Holdings, Inc., a multi-state cannabis operator focused on bettering lives through cannabis. The company held a grand opening for its Provincetown location in May, offering a wide range of cannabis products to consumers.

Of course, cannabis is not a new plant, and Cape Cod has had a long history with the substance. However, with the legalization of recreational use, the industry has become more mainstream and accessible to consumers. As a result, new businesses and opportunities are popping up all over the Cape.

One company that is helping to promote the cannabis industry on Cape Cod is Respect My Region (RMR), a Seattle-based award-winning media, music, cannabis, and technology company. RMR has recently announced strategic partnerships with several cannabis businesses, including a dispensary in Massachusetts.

As the cannabis industry continues to grow and evolve on Cape Cod, it is important for consumers, businesses, and town officials alike to stay informed about new legislation and regulations. The May 1 town meeting in Bourne had no borrowing for capital requests and no reliance on free cash for budget balancing, indicating a potential shift in priorities for the town.

Overall, the cannabis industry on Cape Cod is a complex and rapidly changing landscape. From legal battles to new business opportunities, there is much to navigate for those involved in the industry. However, with the right approach and a commitment to staying informed, the future looks bright for cannabis on Cape Cod.
