With the legalization of recreational marijuana in some states in the United States, Florida is now looking to join the party. In 2018, Weed legalization was signed into law in Vermont, and other states have followed. The effort to make recreational marijuana use legal in Florida could be up to voters. However, in order for the topic to make it on the 2024 ballot, the proposed 'Adult Personal Use of Marijuana' bill must be supported by the legislature.
If passed, the constitutional amendment would allow adults 21 or older to “to possess, purchase, or use marijuana products and marijuana paraphernalia.” This would mean that recreational marijuana use would be legal in the state and the sale of marijuana products would be regulated by the state. The amendment also provides for a taxation system to fund the regulation of the industry and to help reduce the impact of the criminalization of marijuana.
In addition to the proposed amendment, several other laws are expected to take effect in 2023. For instance, the Florida Department of Business and Professional regulation will implement a new set of regulation for medical marijuana dispensaries. These regulation will include rules for the sale and distribution of marijuana products and testing requirements.
