As the state of Maryland moves closer to legalizing recreational marijuana, it is important for those who currently possess a medical marijuana card to understand the process of renewing their card. On January 1, possess of up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana became legal in the state, however, marijuana sales will not be available until 2022. This means that anyone wishing to purchase cannabis must first obtain a medical marijuana card.

Under the new law, the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission (MMCC) will be responsible for issuing medical marijuana cards to qualified patients. This card will allow patients to purchase marijuana from licensed dispensaries and to possess up to two ounces of marijuana for personal, Medical use. In order for a patient to renew their medical marijuana card, they must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be at least 18 years of age.
  2. Have a valid form of identification.
  3. Have a valid Maryland address.
  4. Have a qualifying Medical condition.
  5. Have a valid doctor’s recommendation. Once these requirements are met, a patient must then fill out an application for a medical marijuana card. This application can be completed online or in person at a MMCC office. After the application is approved, the patient will be issued a medical marijuana card that is valid for two years.

The law legalizing the cannabis industry in Maryland expects that minorities, women and disabled veterans will each account for 15% license holders. This means that the MMCC will be giving priority to those who qualify in these categories when issuing medical marijuana cards.

For patients who are currently in possess of a medical marijuana card, it is important to remember that the card must be renewed every two years in order to remain valid. This process involves filling out another application and undergoing the same application process as before. It is also important to note that the MMCC reserves the right to deny applications if they do not meet the requirements.

At this time, there is currently no plan in place to license legal cannabis stores in Maryland before adults can purchase cannabis without a Medical card. This means that for the foreseeable future, medical marijuana cards will still be required for any purchase of marijuana in the state.

In addition, the tax rate for medical marijuana purchases will remain at 4%, while the tax rate for recreational purchases will be set at 15%. This means that those with a valid medical marijuana card will be able to make purchases at a discounted rate. It is important to note, however, that the 15% tax rate applies to the total purchase price and not just the marijuana itself.
