Examining the current and potential future of cannabis in Idaho.

The legalization of cannabis in the United States has been a hot topic of debate for years. While many states have made strides towards legalizing recreational and medical marijuana use, Idaho remains one of just four states that has yet to do so. We asked the people of Boise why they want weed legalized in the state of Idaho, and they bring up some valid points.

Currently, sixteen states permit medical marijuana usage only, and three states (Idaho, Kansas, and South Dakota) remain completely illegal. The majority of the states that do allow recreational marijuana use have strong laws and regulations in place to protect people from the dangers associated with its use.

Ultimately, federal cannabis legalization in the U.S. is still missing its “why.” Every country legalizes cannabis for different reasons, but one common thread is the potential economic benefits it could bring. With no signs of legalization in Idaho anytime soon, many Idahoans feel that their state is missing out on these potential benefits.

One of the main arguments for legalizing marijuana in Idaho is the potential of increased tax revenue. Currently, the state earns a lot of money from the gun industry, with gun sales bringing in a reported $38 million in 2017. Now, is there any change to Idaho law that could help Idaho benefit more than it does from the gun industry? Because right now, California makes $2.5 billion in cannabis tax revenue each year.

Another argument for legalizing marijuana in Idaho is the reduction of crime in neighboring states. People are flocking to Oregon for that sweet organic euphoria, ready to pick from the Lord's Garden that is illegal to possess in Idaho. Here's the thing: in the state of Oregon, not only are people allowed to buy and possess marijuana, but they are also able to transport it across state lines. It's no wonder then that states like Idaho, with strict laws against marijuana, see an increase in crime when their neighbors have looser laws.

One of the most compelling arguments for the legalization of cannabis in Idaho comes from the potential increase in jobs and tourism. Malheur County is the state's biggest money maker from legalized marijuana sales. Idaho lawmakers and law enforcement constantly talk about the potential for increased crime and drug use, but what they're forgetting is that when an industry is legalized, it creates a lot of jobs and draws in a lot of tourists.

In fact, there are only four states where marijuana is fully illegal – Kansas, Idaho, South Carolina and Wyoming. However, that soon could change. With more and more states legalizing recreational marijuana, Idaho could soon be the next state to benefit from the economic benefits of the cannabis industry.

In conclusion, the legalization of cannabis in Idaho could bring a range of benefits, from increased tax revenue to a decrease in crime. The potential for increased jobs and tourism should not be overlooked. While the state remains divided on the issue, it is clear that there are compelling arguments for making marijuana legal in Idaho.
