Despite Democrats controlling both the House and governor's mansion, Pennsylvania is no closer to legalizing marijuana.

Pennsylvania is among the 29 states in the US that have not yet legalized recreational marijuana use. Although there have been efforts to legalize cannabis in the state, it remains illegal for adult-use. The state only permits the use of medical marijuana, which was legalized back in 2016.

However, there is still hope for the legalization of recreational cannabis in Pennsylvania. As of now, lawmakers are pushing for a measure that would legalize adult-use marijuana in the state. Although the bill has not yet been passed, there is a chance that it could pass the state legislature in the future.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has also proposed legalizing and taxing recreational cannabis as part of his 2023-2024 budget request. The governor estimates that the state could generate $188 million in revenue from the taxation of legal adult-use marijuana.

If the bill passes, Pennsylvania would join other states that have legalized recreational cannabis, including Colorado, California, and Washington. The state would also become the first state in the Northeast to legalize adult-use marijuana.

However, not everyone is in favor of legalizing marijuana in Pennsylvania. Some lawmakers and residents are concerned about the potential negative effects of marijuana on public health and safety. Others argue that legalizing cannabis could lead to an increase in drug-related crimes and addiction.

Despite these concerns, many advocates for marijuana legalization argue that legalizing cannabis could have numerous benefits for the state. For one, it could create jobs and generate tax revenue for the state. It could also reduce the number of people who are arrested and incarcerated for drug-related offenses.

As of now, it is unclear when or if Pennsylvania will legalize adult-use marijuana. However, lawmakers and advocates continue to push for the legalization of cannabis in the state.

In conclusion, the legalization of marijuana in Pennsylvania remains a contentious issue. While some lawmakers and residents are in favor of legalizing cannabis, others are concerned about the potential negative effects of marijuana on public health and safety. However, with the proposal from Governor Josh Shapiro to tax adult-use marijuana, it seems that the state is moving closer to legalization. Only time will tell if Pennsylvania will join the growing number of states that have legalized recreational cannabis.
